The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is implementing the project “Sustainability in the Textile and Leather Sector” (STILE). The objective of the project is to “strengthen public and private sector actors’ capacity to fulfil their mandate and responsibilities to ensure compliance with social and environmental standards in the textile, garment and leather industry in Bangladesh.”
The communication component under output 4 of the STILE project intends to contribute to improved compliance with social and environmental standards by its awareness raising and education campaigns as well as with its Women Café’s (community place for workers) and factory Committee (Participation, Safety and Anti-harassment) centric capacity development measures. The project will develop a pool of trainers in partner NGOs and in BGMEA, BKMEA and LFMEAB to build capacity of workers and factory committees. GIZ (The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) Bangladesh on behalf of BMZ (German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development) constructed out a tripartite consortium of Particip, Red Orange Media and Communications and COEL (Centre of Excellence For Leather Skill Bangladesh Limited) to implement the communication component (output 4) of STILE project on the ground level.
Programme objective: Workers in the Bangladeshi textile and leather industry benefit from improved compliance with social, environmental and economic sustainability standards.
Module objective: State and private sector actors have improved fulfilling their mandates and responsibilities to ensure compliance with social and environmental standards in the textile and leather industry in Bangladesh.
The project preliminary focuses on raising awareness and building capacity of (female) workers to actively advocate for compliance with social and environmental standards in their working and living environment. The communication component of STILE project also indents to build capacity of factory committees (participation, safety and anti-harassment committees) and mid level management to create an enabling environment for the workers to raise their concerns and work jointly with the management to improve the compliance with social and environmental standards This is to be achieved by activities designed under four output processes, which are mainly focusing on achieving social and behavior change through effective communication, complemented by capacity development, advisory process and counselling measures of the existing structures.
Timeline: March 2020 – February 2023 (with possibility of extension).
